Thankful for Sleep

We spend a big part of our life sleeping.

And we need it. Without having read any of the scientific studies that have been done on sleep, we just know that a good night’s rest is so vital to our well-being: physically, mentally, and spiritually.

I know an elderly sister in Christ who has struggled terribly to fall asleep—and to stay asleep—almost every night for the last couple of decades. She naps in fits and starts during the day and then faces another long night of tossing and turning.

For some people, sleep is a torment, while for many, sleep is God’s gift.

Somehow those seven or eight hours provide us with:

a restoration of energy,

a reset of our mood,

an escape from the day’s stresses,

a fertile atmosphere for fresh ideas,

a sense of peace,

and so much more.

“I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety” (Ps. 4:8).

And when I awake, I am still with you—thank you, God.
